PAT Testing Information

What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)?

A portable appliance is generally regarded as an item which is not part of a fixed installation, but is connected to a power source by a flexible cable and plug. This would include mains power tools, microwave ovens, desktop PCs, extension leads , fan heaters etc. These should be periodically tested to ensure they are safe to use.

Why do i need PAT testing?

The Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) place a duty of care on employers to ensure the safety of employees at work and other people affected by the work activity using the workplace. For example customers in a letting bedroom or employees working in an office.

Who can test appliances?

Legislation says that the person carrying out the tests must be a competent person. The tester must have an understanding of the modes of electrical, mechanical or thermal damage to electrical appliances and their flexes. Those carrying out the inspection and testing must be competent to undertake the inspection and, where appropriate, testing of electrical equipment and appliances having due regard of their own safety and that of others

When is testing carried out?

Testing involves the equipment being disconnected from the mains, visually checked and then plugged into a tester. We appreciate that this can be inconvenient in offices and other environments so testing can be carried out on evenings and weekends. Unfortunately this may have an effect on pricing but wherever possible we will work with you to minimise disruption.

Is the testing safe for IT equipment?

All testing equipment used is safe for use with computers and IT equipment.

Servers and other “always on” systems? Sometimes when it is not possible to turn off equipment, a visual only inspection will be carried out. Therefore during the next maintenance period it is advised that a full inspection and test is carried out.

Pass or Fail?

Every item tested will either pass or fail there is no grey area. We will, free of charge, replace any broken plug tops or incorrectly rated fuse and shorten any damaged extension cables and retest where necessary. No repairs will be carried out to appliances which fail. Any appliance which fails should be removed from use and either disposed of or repaired by a qualified person.

Record keeping?

Legislation does not specifically require any records to be kept, we however feel that to keep track of appliances this is essential. To assist you with this we will as part of our service Tag each item of equipment with a unique number and pass or fail sticker Provide you with a log of the tests carried out and the results obtained. Compile all results in an asset register which can be accessed electronically or send you a hard copy.
